Canon: Vampire Knight
Version: Manga
Canon Point: Night 79, when Kaname reveals he released Shizuka Hiou from her cage to fulfill her grudge.
Age: 18
Gender: Male
History: over here
Personality:
Our first impression of Zero is that he’s cold and reserved, opposite to the brightness of Yuuki Cross. He separates himself from his classmates, and the only person he really interacts with is Yuuki and the Chairman. But even with them, Zero is distant even if the two consider him as family, he doesn’t accept it. He doesn’t confide in them with what’s going on in his head, nor does he speak of his intentions to them. It’s because of his closemouthed behavior, Yuuki and the Chairmain suspects that he may run away if gone for too long.
When he’s addressed he comes off as cranky. He speaks very matter of fact, keeping to the point and saying what he means sincerely. He’s also not easy to joke with, not seeing the humor in teasing and often getting annoyed by the Chairman’s playful antics.
Despite how cold he comes off as he’s actually very kindhearted and has a strong sense of duty. At a very young age, Zero knew he was destined for a certain task, to kill vampires and protect human beings against them. Now that he’s older, he takes that task very seriously. Agreeing to become a guardian, making sure the day class doesn’t know the secret of the night class, and preserving peace and order on campus. Although, he doesn’t agree with the Chairman’s pacifistic goals, he still protects the campus in hopes of being able to learn more about the vampires living so closely so that he may kill them more effectively.
Zero is very stubborn. He hides the fact that he was starving himself, and slowly becoming a level E. Even when he’s found out by Kaien Cross, and Kaname that his current condition is worsening, he refuses to accept help, even accept the fact that he was losing control. When Zero’s mind is set to do something, he carries out his intentions. Whether it is confronting the Night Class , or Kaname himself or even leaving Cross Academy, every decision Zero makes is whole-hearted, placing his full resolve into it.
He’s a fearless fighter. Always up for the task when it comes to killing a vampire, or reprimanding them. He doesn’t even flinch when the night class confronts him, and he doesn’t hesitate to be cold with Kaname.
Still even if he hates vampires, Zero helps Yuuki out when she’s too shy to give a gift to Kaname. He despises the Dorm leader and pureblood vampire, but for Yuuki, he puts his differences aside to help her with the one she likes. In order to protect Yuuki, he agrees to become her shield, tolerating Kaname in order to ensure her safety.
Even if he comes off as cold, when he turns down the girl he saved, Nadeshiko Shindo, he apologizes. Feeling he’s not worthy of her affections. Zero distances himself from people because of his inner turmoil. He feels insecure being around other people, fearing he may hurt them in some way. When he starts taking blood from Yuuki repeatedly, he feels remorseful…thinking that he’s hurting Yuuki. This aspect of their relationship tears Zero up inside. This is why he agreed to be a tool to Yuuki, allowing her to use him in any way possible as an approach to atone from his transgressions against her.
At a young age, Zero is guilty about his healthiness versus his twin brother, Ichiru’s frailness. He feels helpless against his brother’s state, and supplements this with trying to be there for his brother as much as possible. Unfortunately, Zero feels as if he failed him, by not truly understanding how Ichiru felt.
Zero often has to prove himself, not to Yuuki and the night class but the other hunters who believe he’s a hazard to them and everyone around him. He promised his master, Toga Yagari, that he wouldn’t make this mentor regret losing his eye to protect him. And he’s often going on various missions by the Hunter’s association to prove he’s a capable hunter despite what he has become. He must also prove himself to his family’s legacy. The Kiryuus were considered the best hunters in the world, and to live up to his parent’s legacy is additionally placed on his shoulders.
Fears:
Zero worries of falling into the Level E, becoming a creature only motivated by their bloodlust. Of losing himself to the beast that he constantly fights, becoming no better than the vengeful vampire who viciously attacked his family.
He’s anxious of losing and hurting Yuuki as well. She is the only person who he’s opened his heart to, and the only person who knows how much he suffers. He fears he may lose to his own monster, killing her in bloodlust. He also dreads losing her to Kaname as well, since everything in his life has been taken away by purebloods.
He fears not being able to dictate his own life. The more the manga progresses, it seems that his entire existence has been guided by the hands of purebloods. Whether it is the pureblood who murdered his family, Kaname who controls him through using Yuuki, Yuuki whose blood he craves, and later on he finds out that Kaname was using the murder of his parents to fashion the best vampire hunter in order to combat vampires. Within his body is the blood of various purebloods, and he feels having their poison in his body will ultimately allow them to control him, if not already.
Weaknesses: Personality-wise It’s hard for Zero to open up to people. He placed barriers around his heart due to the vicious attack and murder of his family. Something he truly hasn’t come to terms with, nor will he every confide in someone about. The events of what happened that night continued to haunt Zero, even to the point where he can’t have a night’s sleep.
It’s also hard for him to trust people. There was an incident in which his mentor, Toga Yagari, lost an eye saving Zero when he trusted a seemingly harmless vampire, who attempted to kill him. Because of that he is wary of people, and even more caution about a vampire’s word.
Zero has an extreme hatred for Vampires. They are responsible for his parent’s death, his own self-hatred, and the reason he can’t move on and live. His entire being is invested to kill vampires, and his abhorrence is what motives him to become a guardian of the Cross Academy. Under the guise of protecting the human student body from their vampiric classmates, he hopes to learn more about the weaknesses of vampires, so he can effectively kill them. His hatred causes him to act irrationally, often going to the Night dorms ready to kill. And he has no problem antagonizing Kaname Kuran, whenever he can.
But at the root of his hatred is succumbing to his own beastly hunger. A thing he tries to suppress and hide from those around him. But at the end, he forces himself to starve to the point of attacking the people closest to him, unable to control his hunger unless sated. Later in the manga, due to Yuuki’s absence he must rely on hunting other vampires to suppress his urge. His body rejects the blood tablets, because he only hungers her blood.
Yuuki Cross (or rather Kuran), is considered a weakness of Zero. She is the only one he can rely on, even when he’s at his hungriest, he can drink from her. Yuuki is the only one who knows how monstrous he can be, and yet she still accepts him. And who still believes he can be happy despite what he has become. This is the reason why Zero believes that Yuuki owns him. Not only does Zero crave her blood, but he’s partially given his heart to her as well.
Zero hates his current state. He loathes what he has become. In the beginning, he tried to kill himself by using his anti-vampire gun. Being a vampire makes him a disgrace to other vampire hunters, and being an Ex-human, who could potential succumb to the level E, makes the night class become wary of him, and being what he is, makes him dangerous to even the students of the day class. Zero knows all of this, and this is why he avoids contact with humans, and tries to prove himself to the hunters, and even show the vampires that he’s capable of controlling himself.
Mundane Strengths/Abilities: Zero is excellent with his gun. His marksmanship is top notch, being able to hit a target dead on.
He is fast and strong, being able to catch a noble vampire off guard to flip them. And whip out his gun, quickly. He even had to add a chain to his gun while on school to slow down his speed, and shorten his reach.
He’s also good at horseback riding, even being able to tame White Lily, a very temperamental horse, which could attribute to another ability of being good with animals.
And although, Zero sleeps through his classes, or skips them entirely, he’s still able to get the material. He is intelligent, and needs little instruction.
Since it was his job to cook for his family while they were out hunting, he’s very good at cooking.
Sensitivity/Magical Ability:
Zero was raised as a vampire hunter, and some elements of how they combat vampires could be considered magical. Zero uses special weapons that can only harm a vampire, such as the Bloody Rose. But what makes the weapon special is the metal. One of the ancient ancestors of the vampire race threw her heart into molten metal, so that human beings have something to contest vampires with. Out of the metal that contained her heart, weapons were created. But the Bloody Rose seems to contain her spirit.
Vampire hunters used spells and wards to keep out vampires. Such as Zero’s tattoo on his neck which is used to suppress vampires. It is used in conjunction with Yuuki’s bracelet. The Hunter’s association uses wards to keep out vampires, a vampire cannot enter unless a hunter brings one in. Hunters have an innate ability to sense vampire, Zero personally can tell the difference between a pureblood and a regular vampire, due to the blood he’s drunk and his own hunter abilities.
Supply List: Zero is a minimalist. He only carries what he needs. It’s because of how little he owns, Yuuki and Kaien Cross always suspect he’s running away when he is out too long.
Zero will only have the clothes on his back, which is his day class uniform from Cross Academy. Bloody Rose, his anti-vampire gun. Several packs of blood tablets, ammunition for his gun (ones specially designed for vampires and plain ones for humans), and some money.

Sample RP post:
A vampire had done it.
The local graveyard had been disturbed by one of those pureblood beasts in a human's guise, who used their power of necromancy to risen all the corpses from their graves. Zero would have been more impressed, if the vampire had done the decent thing and placed them all back to their respected plots. But of course not, only one shameful act could follow another when a vampire was involved. And now he was here to clear up the mess, and to ensure that no was harmed because of a vampire's whim.
The night air was chilly, and the full moon cast a white light over them. The moon supplied Zero with light, but in truth he didn't need it. Thanks to his own tainted blood, he could see well enough in the woods. And his heighten sense of smell could pick up the stench of decaying bodies in the distance. If for not for these abilities he wouldn't be able to properly protect the village nearby. He hated it, and yet he felt it was his way of repenting. For each and every thought he had of consuming warm blood, he will use his vampiric abilities to protect the very lives he craved to extinguish with his hunger.
The light haired hunter stalked through the woods, searching for any villagers who might have wandered into the woods. His nose couldn't make out anything besides the cadavers in the area. And that was when he heard a scream to the right of him. Without hesitation, Zero exploded into a run, racing through the sea of trees in the direction of the shriek, hoping that his legs moved fast enough to make it there in time. He heard the scream again, and he lunged forward, Bloody Rose whipped out and already aimed at the head of a flesh hungry undead. He took the shot, not even bothering to warn the person being attacked. Any second longer and the corpse would have bitten them for sure.
Zero tensed body relaxed seeing that the zombie fell to the ground dead, but he still kept his gun out, just in case there were more of them. His amethyst eyes surveyed the area as the person he save shouts and flailed about. The defenseless human pleading with him not to shoot, obviously frightened and confused by the current situation. Zero was half-listening; only hearing the last of what the other said, before replying."...If I thought you were a zombie, you would have been dead by now. And, they don't talk, especially loudly.”
Then his eyes caught sight of the blood pooling by the corpse's head. It was a deep dark brown, coagulated, since it was within a corpse for who knows how long. But the thought was already placed in his mind. His suppressed hunger threatening to close his throat up, he shook his head clearing them of those thoughts. Pushing them under to be forgotten.
Zero quickly turned from the man, placing his gun back into its holster, as he regained himself. There were no threats yet, but if the man kept shouting like he did, his voice would attract them. He looked to the human,"...Quiet down, or you'll get both of us killed."
Zero began to walk in the direction of the village, letting the other decide whether to follow him or not. "I'll take you back towards the village."
